A 300-year-old church, 36 fixtures, and zero holes drilled

How we handled lighting, sound, and an OB1 broadcast for Paltaniemen kuvakirkko's tricentennial without touching a single protected fresco.

Some venues hand you a rigging grid and a truss plan. Paltaniemen kuvakirkko, a wooden church near Kajaani with ceiling frescoes painted by Emanuel Granit in the 1720s, handed us one instruction instead: don’t drill into a 300-year-old fresco.

For the church’s tricentennial weekend on 15–16 August 2026, that constraint shaped everything — a 36-fixture lighting rig built entirely on floor stands and low-profile mounts, sound reinforcement for both Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Kainuu Cantata and a Sunday service led by the Bishop of Kuopio, and a live OB1 broadcast to Radio Dei from a building with no reliable network connection to speak of.

We wrote up the full case study — how the lighting rig avoided every hard point in a protected structure, why a cantata and a spoken service need almost opposite sound treatment, and how the broadcast signal left the building without competing with the event itself.
